Anglers should look for trout in shallow water at this time of the year. Most of the anglers are fishing the other more popular streams in the nearby Rocky Mountain National Park. I rigged up with a size #14 Elk Hair Caddis with a green Flash Midge for a trailer. There are good hatches taking place. The river freezes for much of its reaches from November through early March. Unlike the generic fly shop trout flies, we have specific imitations of all the insects in St. Vrain Creek and in all stages of life that are applicable to fishing. We have some great stonefly hatches in Colorado and while not all rivers carry all species of salmonflies, you can often fish stonefly adult patterns with confidence from May to September. Keep in mind that Highway 7 is still closed south of Lyons. Start off in bigger sizes and get smaller till September hits (size 8 - 16). There are a few pull offs and the fishing is tight quartered with more willows and branches to find than beginners will appreciate. They are the most plentiful of all the caddisflies on the stream. Seasons:Most of the headwaters of this creek is in very high country. Be aware that there is a lot of private land between Peaceful Valley through Raymond,so mind where you drop your line. From Spinney Reservoir the South Platte flows for 5 1/2 miles before it meets Elevenmile Reservoir. There are good BWO hatches taking place as well as other insects. You can catch brook trout in the upper reaches as well as cutthroat. Just how far you venture upstream will greatly depend on the physical shape you are in. 10/23/21 Conditions are good. There are mostly brown and rainbow trout in the lower sections but the higher elevations hold plenty of brook trout and cutthroat trout.
